About G.H. Bass & Co.

Bench crafted and hand stitched since 1876, G.H. Bass & Co.'s shoes are defined by their quality. Nevertheless, they've also been the origin of more than a few classic American trends. In 1936, the Maine-based company introduced a new and practical design they dubbed the Weejun. The shoe was based on a traditional Norwegian farming shoe meant for "loafing in the field"—thus the penny loafer was born. These days, the company is keeping with the penny tradition with a campaign that helps students pursue higher education one 1-cent piece at a time. According to Bass's president, that's because the company "was born…out of one man's dedication to making things better—and today that philosophy guides everything we do."
