Commonly Asked Questions

Q:

Do the chai/cacoa blends have sugar? If so, how many grams of sugar per serving?

Julia A.  asked on  Feb 2, 2013

A:

The matcha blends are sweetened but only with pure stevia leaf and coconut nectar. These are some of the healthiest sweeteners, do not effect blood sugar levels and are perfect for those with diabetes or are concerned about weight management. The average is 3-4 grams sugar/serving.

Q:

How many cups of tea can I make out of each 60 gram bag? (Using what size cup; i.e. 4 oz? 6 oz?)

Catherine M.  asked on  Feb 2, 2013

A:

A Matcha blend like the Cacao or Matcha Chai has 6-8 servings or about 8 cups of tea using 4-6 ounces water and 4-6 ounces milk. There are about 60 serving in the 60gram plain Organic Matcha (1 gram per serving or 1/2-1 tsp) and you would use the same amount of water and milk.

Q:

What is the caffeine content of these powders?

Sharon N.  asked on  Feb 2, 2013

A:

Matcha does have a fair amount of caffeine but to give you a little more insight...the caffeine in Matcha is alkalizing rather than the opposite—acidic. The caffeine in Matcha releases into the bloodstream slowly. The typical serving size of plain Matcha varies from ½ teaspoon to 1 teaspoon, so your actual caffeine consumption can vary from 34 to about 68mg, whether you use ½ tsp or 1 tsp.

Q:

I normally make tea that comes in tea bags. Is there any certain way to make this kind of tea to make it taste as best as possible?

Luann T.  asked on  Feb 3, 2013

A:

For someone new to Matcha it can be strong in taste in the beginning. Adding almond or coconut milk counteracts any bitterness in Matcha tea. Try whisking the plain Matcha in a pot of about 2/3 almond/coconut milk to 1/3 water and bring to a simmer/boil. It is not advised to mix it with dairy because it minimizes the antioxidant benefits. If you add pure stevia or coconut nectar (both natural and does not affect the blood sugar) it really helps to create a creamy and delicious treat along with minimizing bitterness. The flavored matcha blends they make are delicious and already sweetened and ready to go. Another tip is to add your matcha to smoothies and shakes or even with just coconut water and almond milk cold is delicious too!
