Sorry for the confusion! You do not need to count the number of pins. There are two kinds of Apple connectors: the wider 30-pin connector and the thinner Lightning connector. Newer Apple devices (e.g. iPhone 5) have the thinner Lightning connector. Most older Apple devices use the 30-pin connector.

We suggest using a search engine (Google, Bing, etc.) to search for pictures of each type. You can also double check the Apple website and/or your device's user manual.
