Hanae Mori Eau de Parfum or Eau de Toilette for Women
Although dark berries and rich woods usually lend themselves to evening fragrances, this eponymous scent from Hanae Mori is designed for casual wear. An airy and exotic floral heart comes through in both concentrations to help temper the woodsy base, which is also lightened by sandalwood and almond-tree notes.
Hanae Mori has been designing for decades, and although she is considered a modern icon of women’s liberation in Japan, her designs tend toward the old-fashioned. Her logo, a butterfly at rest, tops this fragrance’s glass flacon to lend it a sense of simplicity. The woods and sweet berries each add a touch of contemporary elegance to this women’s fragrance, but its most defining notes have been used in oriental fragrances for years: jasmine, ylang-ylang, and sandalwood.

About Hanae Mori
After opening her fashion house in Japan in 1951, Hanae Mori spent the next decade and a half concentrating on the booming film industry, for which she designed hundreds of costumes seen on the screen. By 1965, she was able to parlay this success to the runways of New York, and then to Paris, where she opened a showroom in 1977. Though her innovative silhouettes and trendsetting flight attendant uniforms for Japan Airlines—one iteration featured a miniskirt—brought her international fame, it’s her fragrances for which she’s now known. Launched in 1996, Butterfly’s lingering notes of vanilla have made it a mainstay of the fragrance world, its distinctive butterfly-shaped cap now synonymous with the groundbreaking designer.
