Behind the Scenes

The Eagles’ breakup was so fractious that it landed on Rolling Stone’s list of the 10 messiest breakups in music history. Clashing personalities and a struggle for creative control produced long-simmering tensions that boiled over at a show in 1980, where Glenn Frey exchanged threats with guitarist Don Felder while still on stage. After their breakup, Don Henley responded to reunion questions by saying the band would play together again “when hell freezes over.”

Reunion

Country singer Travis Tritt is widely credited with helping get the band back together. He did a rendition of “Take It Easy,” the Eagles’ first single, and asked the band to appear in the music video. They soon re-emerged with a reunion tour and album, both aptly titled Hell Freezes Over. The album reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts, and a few years later the Eagles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
