Holstein’s stovetop espresso makers are modeled after the classic Moka Express, invented by Alfonso Bialetti in 1933 as a way for Italians to brew great coffee at home during the Great Depression. According to The New York Times, 9 of 10 Italian households own a Moka, which is so iconic, it has been exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art.
To get the rich, flavorful coffee at home, just fill the coffee maker with hot water and grounds, then set it on the stove. The water will steam, and the pressure will push it through the tube to filter through the coffee grounds. Though the result doesn’t technically qualify as espresso, Serious Eats declares it “beautifully bittersweet and strong enough to get you through your morning.” It can be used on the stove, over a campfire, or above a volcanic crater.
