From a young age, Kenzo Takada knew he liked fashion. But his traditional Japanese parents weren’t as thrilled, so he followed their wishes and went to university to study literature. Less than two years later, he switched to fashion school instead. He found success almost immediately, winning a prestigious prize and landing a designing job at a department store. From there he moved to Paris and became part of the couture culture. He struck out on his own in 1970 with his first boutique, Jungle Jap, whose interesting designs earned praise in Vogue magazine; next he added a menswear line and launched his first fragrances. Though Kenzo has since retired, his legacy lives on in the brand’s luxury offerings for men and women, which go beyond just apparel to include phone cases, bags, and other accessories.
