About Lanvin

Today, Lanvin is the oldest French fashion house in operation, “best loved among editors and celebs for exquisitely made womenswear,” according to New York Magazine. The New York Daily News called Lanvin “one of fashion’s hottest labels” when reporting on a pair of metallic-capped Lanvin sneakers spotted on Michelle Obama. But though the house enjoys a storied fashion history and reputation for luxury today, it rose from humble beginnings.

Born on New Year’s Day, 1867, Jeanne Lanvin was the oldest of 11 children. She started work young, delivering hats for a milliner, and eventually became a milliner herself. But it wasn’t until her daughter Marguerite was born that her love for fashion truly flourished. She made clothes for Marguerite’s doll, then for Marguerite herself—and millinery customers took note of the the girl’s gorgeous frocks. They started ordering clothing, and from there, a fashion house was born. By the 1920s, the house of Lanvin had seven branches in France and worldwide, and Jeanne was an influential member of the fashion world. Today, Lanvin is under the creative direction of designer Alber Elbaz, whose work has ushered in a new era of popularity for the house.
