Maleficent

Maleficent, a twist on Disney’s version of Sleeping Beauty, tells the story of the villain behind Princess Aurora’s curse, following her gradual transformation from unrepentant baddie to the peacemaker between two warring kingdoms.

Production Design

In keeping with its fairy tale roots, the film employs a lush visual style that’s captured by sweeping cinematography. Verdant forests and grim fortresses, rendered with a combination of practical and computer-generated effects, have a realistic feel while still seeming shrouded in enchantment. Angelina Jolie’s makeup was another deft stroke drawn by the designers; her twisted horns and intimidating cheekbones capture the essence of her character in an unexpected, thrilling way.
