The Alan Parsons Project: The Complete Albums Collection
Early in his career, Alan Parsons worked as an engineer on Pink Floyd’s seminal The Dark Side of the Moon, as well as Abbey Road and Let It Be by the Beatles. But with The Alan Parsons Project, he and Eric Woolfson set out to do something new: create a group that was driven by the producer. In an interview with Billboard about this new collection, Parsons reminisced on the novelty of that idea. “I don’t think any producer had ever put his own name on a concept album, and that’s what we wanted to do,” he said.
The band’s 10 studio albums included hits such as “I Wouldn’t Want to Be Like You,” “Eye in the Sky,” and “Games People Play.” This collection includes them all together for the first time, including the Project’s first album, Tales of Mystery Imagination, inspired by the writings of Edgar Allan Poe. But it also includes The Sicilian Defence, their never-released fifth album. At the time, they were embroiled in a dispute with Arista, but contractually obligated to deliver an album. They recorded The Sicilian Defense in three days and named it after a famous chess move, alluding to the defensive position they were taking in “games” with the record company. Once they resolved the disputes, the album was shelved and forgotten—until now, when it’s being released for a first time as part of this collection.
