Simply put, a mono recording collects each channel of sound—the vocals, the instrumentals—and pans them into a single track, as opposed to stereo sound’s multiple tracks and more expansive feel. The sonic result is analogous to black-and-white vs. color film: mono is more primitive, perhaps, but somehow also more inviting.

The Beatles recorded their first 10 albums in mono, all of which are included here, in addition to a two-disc set of mono singles. Finally, the 1965 stereo mixes of Help! and Rubber Soul join the mono versions on their respective CDs, useful for picking out the differences between the two.
