About Yves Saint Laurent
In 1957, legendary designer Christian Dior calmly passed the reins of his eponymous fashion house to a remarkably young, 21-year-old Yves Saint Laurent. This single act kick-started the boy wonder’s enduring fashion legacy, and he launched his own line in 1962. During the decades that followed, his fame would skyrocket, propelled by groundbreaking, often controversial, designs that turned celebrities, fashion lovers, and fellow designers Miuccia Prada and Giorgio Armani into devout fans. Of his lasting influence, designer Christian Lacroix once quipped, “He’s got the form of Chanel with the opulence of Dior and the wit of Schiaparelli.”
Saint Laurent was both lauded and slandered for this ingenuity and his often-paradoxical themes. Culling influence from cultural movements, the Beats, and political protests unfolding around the world during the ‘60s and ‘70s, Saint Laurent upset old-world fashion ideals with nearly every collection. He ruffled the feathers of the fashion elite by blending blue-collar garments such as peasant blouses and leather jackets with his couture works. He also outfitted women in tuxedoes and fedoras before it was common. His long-time partner, Pierre Berge, famously summed up Saint Laurent’s legacy in one turn-of-phrase: “Chanel gave women freedom. Yves Saint Laurent gave them power.”
