Despite making significant strides in the classroom and in the workplace during the last 50 years, women are still markedly underrepresented in science and engineering occupations, according to research by the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Girlstart empowers female students to succeed academically and pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers through educational programming, teacher training, career expos, and other events.
During its weeklong all-girl summer camps, Girlstart immerses campers entering 3rd–10th grade in up to 40 hours of integrated STEM education, helping them cultivate future career opportunities. Using innovative teaching models and processes, Girlstart exposes camp participants to subject matter ranging from computer programming and robotics to geography and industrial design. Camp sessions follow broad topical themes, from an engineering-focused camp—in which campers examine structures, create amusement-park rides, and construct 3-D models—to a nature-oriented camp focusing on the wildlife and habitats of a tropical rainforest. In 2010 98% of camp participants experienced a boost in confidence regarding STEM-related skills, with 93% showing an increased awareness of how higher education broadens career options.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to help provide girls with access to the academic opportunities available through Girlstart summer camp. If G-Team members raise $350, Girlstart can sponsor one girl for a week of summer camp. Each additional $350 raised will sponsor another girl for one week.
Unlike traditional Groupon deals, G-Team campaigns typically don't offer you a "discount" or "savings." So "buyer" beware—when you click "Buy" to donate your time or money to a worthwhile G-Team cause, the only discount you may receive is 100% off free, priceless karma. Read more about G-Team.
