2001: A Space Odyssey

Apes discover how to use weapons, astronauts head to Jupiter to make contact with a mysterious monolith, and a seemingly friendly super-computer becomes sentient—and deadly. But what keeps Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi masterpiece on most critic’s lists of top 100 films ever made goes beyond a nutshell storyline. It’s the experience. The movie’s astonishing visual effects—fused to a hummable, sometimes distressing, score of Strauss and Ligeti—look better than those of many modern CGI space epics and interpretations of what the moon might look like. From the bombastic Thus Spoke Zarathustra opening and the space stations dancing to The Blue Danube to HAL 9000’s existential crisis and Dr. David Bowman’s mind-bending trip through the monolith—2001: A Space Odyssey is a film best caught on the big screen.

Count Basie Theatre

Upon entering the Count Basie Theatre, guests may feel as though they’ve slipped through a crack in time and ended up in the early 1900s. Opulent marble staircases and gold details grab the eyes of visitors, recalling the decadence of Hollywood’s history and gently pulling them to the auditorium. There, the acoustically pleasing construction wins out as sound spreads and funnels through a sunburst dome embellished with a dangling chandelier. Since opening in 1926, the Count Basie has earned numerous accolades, including a nod from Pollstar magazine, which listed it as one of the Top 100 Worldwide Theatre Venues.
