2014 Golden Bowl
If the current Women’s Flat-Track Derby Association rankings are any indication, the 2014 Golden Bowl will be a proving ground for some of the country’s finest roller-derby programs. Three top-ten teams will compete: the host B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls (no. 2), the Angel City Derby Girls (no. 7), and the Windy City Rollers (no. 9), who may feel some jet lag after skating in from Chicago. The 38th-ranked SoCal Derby rounds out the impressive field, infusing the tournament with the pluck of an underdog. As the skaters pinball around the oval, grub from vendors including Donna’s Tamales, Fist of Flour Pizza, and Smokin’ Oak BBQ keep spectators’ appetites at bay. The entire tournament takes place at the Craneway Pavilion, a historical Ford assembly plant with a retro industrial interior and views of both Bay Area bridges.
B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls
A founding member-league of the Women’s Flat-Track Derby Association, the B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls have established themselves as one of the most formidable roller-derby leagues in the world. Since forming in 2004, the league has grown to encompass four Bay Area home teams, one each in Oakland, San Francisco, Richmond, and Berkeley. Just as a chicken picks its finest eggs to hurl at the farmer’s house, the league draws the finest jammers, blockers, and pivots from its four home teams to form a traveling all-star team, which placed third at the 2013 WFTDA Championships and are currently ranked second by the WFTDA.
