The Clean House
Matilde may be a house cleaner, but as the daughter of two Brazilian standups, she feels that comedy is her true calling. That's why she's often found trying to craft the perfect joke instead of dusting. Luckily, she gets to put her comedic skills to good use when the relationship of her employers—a pair of married doctors—gets even messier than the house. The jokes don't always land, however, as they're told in Matilde's native Portugese. And yet, the script proposes that humor can break down language barriers, becoming an invaluable tool as the characters navigate, love, loss, and renewal. Hailed by Variety as a "wondrously mad and moving work," and dubbed a "deeply romantic comedy" by The New York Times, playwright Sarah Ruhl's modern fairy tale took home the 2004 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, which is annually awarded to the best English-language play written by a woman. Its witty dialogue and passionate compassion also earned a Pulitzer Prize nomination.
