A Small Family Business

Jack McCracken has every reason to be happy. A blameless and upright life has culminated in his elevation to president of his father-in-law's furniture company, a position he plans to tend with the utmost transparency. All it takes to unravel his idyllic existence, however, is £1.87: the total value of the shampoo shoplifted by his younger daughter, Samantha. Jack takes his first, tentative step into corruption by acquiescing to the demands of the private eye who caught her, setting the man up with a contract at the furniture firm. As the detective starts uncovering unsavory revelations, Jack finds himself at the center of a web of adultery, corporate espionage, and mafia drug smuggling that implicates every member of his covetous extended clan. Caught between his moral code and the preservation of his family, Jack scrambles to defend his increasingly dubious actions in this pitch-black comedy.

Alan Ayckbourn's withering critique of the Thatcherite greed-is-good ethos remains just as sharp as when it premiered at London's National Theatre in 1987—the venue's current revival run has been praised by the Telegraph for delivering "both laughs and chills with great panache." A performance will be recorded live, and then screened at theaters worldwide for those who can't take the time to migrate to Britain right now.

NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts

NYU sits at the center of the creative fondue pot that is Greenwich Village, but it spent its first 172 years without a full-scale, professional performance space. That finally changed in 2003 with the opening of the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. Embracing the artistic spirit of its neighborhood, the center's 860-seat proscenium theater hosts everything from student productions to innovative performance groups from around the world.
