A Year with Frog and Toad
One is fussy; the other’s fun-loving. One is short; the other’s tall. One loves tea and cookies; the other—well, they both love tea and cookies. They’re Frog and Toad, and they’ve leapt out of their children’s books and onto the stage. Commissioned for the theater by the daughter of writer/illustrator/Frog-and-Toad-creator Arnold Lobel, A Year with Frog and Toad is a series of vignettes in the lives of two of the forest’s fastest friends, set to a toe-tapping score of jazzy showtunes. Audiences join Frog and Toad as they learn about willpower with a batch of fresh-baked goods (“Cookies”), go swimming no matter how funny they look in their bathing suits (“Getta Loada Toad”), and dare the bumpiest of sled rides (“Down the Hill”). Part fable and part fantasy, A Year with Frog and Toad wraps kid-friendly morals such as “treat others with respect” and “greet every amphibian with a handshake” in hummable songs even parents will be singing the next day.
