When it premiered in 1975, A Chorus Line wowed audiences with its inventive reflection on Broadway, earning nine Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical. Played on a bare stage, the musical follows a group of dancers as they audition for a Broadway show, knowing that of the 17 who survive the process’s first cut, only eight will be cast and the other nine will be fed to the producer’s pet chinchillas. Between energetic dancing and tunes such as “I Hope I Get It” and “What I Did for Love,” the hopefuls reveal their troubled pasts and vie for the director’s approval. Glitzy costumes and, of course, elaborate choreography fill this production, a touring offshoot of an acclaimed 2006 Broadway revival.
