Produced in association with Obsidian Theatre Company, Acting Up Stage Company’s production of Caroline, or Change sets the social and political upheaval of the American South in the 1960s to a moving musical score. The Tony Award–nominated script follows a maid working for a Jewish family in Louisiana, struggling to provide for her family and maintain her dignity despite the indignities of domestic service, institutionalized racism, and having to use a yodelling dryer. Placed against the tumultuous events of the Vietnam War and civil rights movement, the show creates an emotionally resonant portrait of the fractious time period in affecting microcosm. Shows take place in the Berkeley Street Theatre, a consumer gas station that has been converted to an intimate 250-seat venue with handsome red brick walls to muffle the sounds of feral automobiles hungrily searching for long gone pumps.
