For Don (don’t call him Donald), victory is all that matters. As a longtime Little League coach and father of the team’s star pitcher, the blue-collar tough guy rules his team of tykes like a tyrant and has no tolerance for second place. For the more gentle Michael, a corporate executive and baseball greenhorn who just moved to the community, all that matters is that the kids have fun. When Michael becomes Don’s coaching assistant, the laughs come at a fever pitch as the polar opposites butt heads. Using the audience as a surrogate for the team, the two-man show follows the mismatched coaches from the beginning of the baseball season to the final championship game, exposing the identity crises of American Dads with ample heart and humor.
Recently seen in The Comedy Roast of Ebenezer Scrooge, Actors Theater of Minnesota regular and Stevie Ray’s Improv Company instructor Tim Dybevik brings his sharp comic chops to the caustic role of Don. Veteran television and movie actor Pat O’Brien—best known as Mr. Dewey, the downtrodden math teacher, defeated detention overlord, and vice-principle of Bayside High on the long running hit Saved by the Bell—adds the pathos-laden Michael to an impressive resume.
Actors Theater of Minnesota
Although it’s known for comedies such as the two-man, 24-character A Tuna Christmas, Actors Theater of Minnesota also places a significant emphasis on education and corporate training. At The Creative Institute, the ensemble trains students how to work theatrical media such as improv and writing into their everyday problem-solving skills.
