The 23rd annual AFI Latin American Film Festival brings more than 50 films from around the Hispanophone world to the big screen, celebrating the cinema of Latin America and the Iberian peninsula. Noteworthy films include the satiric Juan of the Dead (October 6 and 7 at 11:45 p.m.), about a feckless Cuban who takes it upon himself to turn the tide of a zombie outbreak in Havana, starting his own business to dispose of the walking dead while the government dithers and blames the chaos on dissidents. [REC] 3: Genesis (September 21 and 22 at 11:15 p.m.) eschews the found-footage horror of its predecessors for a madcap romp as bride-to-be Clara fights back against the zombies attacking her wedding armed with a chainsaw and a bouquet to toss at commitment-phobic undead. Charting the career of hit Venezuela band Los Amigos Invisibles, La Casa del Ritmo (October 6 and 7 at 9:30 p.m.) delves into their rise from Caracas to stardom with one-on-one interviews and footage from their successful 2011 New York show.

Admission to any film on Thursday and Friday also includes happy hour from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the AFI Silver Café, where guests can nibble on complimentary snacks, enjoy drink specials, and feast ears on exuberant tunes.

AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center

Originally built in 1938 by noted movie-palace architect John Eberson, the AFI Silver Theatre’s vintage hall transports viewers back to the heyday of the silver screen. In the fully restored main auditorium, curling lines decorate the wood-colored ceiling and glowing wings unfurl from the screen, echoing its art deco origins and comforting penguins who, also, will never fly. Two new, stadium-style theaters triple the number of possible screenings, and each auditorium comes tricked out with projectors that can handle everything from 16 mm to 70 mm film as well as the latest digital video.
