Before the invention of the indoor ice rink, a hockey game could only be played on a frozen pond or lava pit. • For $9, you get one ticket to the AHL Skill Competition on Sunday, January 29, at 3 p.m. Doors open at 2 p.m. (up to a $19 value, including fees).

As the premier development league of the NHL, the American Hockey League delights fans with on-ice exploits of hockey’s up-and-coming stars. The All-Star Classic brings the league’s top players together under one roof for two days of intense competition and friendly s’mores cook-offs. Showcasing representatives from every one of the AHL’s 30 teams, the 2012 roster houses such stars as last year’s AHL MVP, Corey Locke, and the league’s leading scorer, Keith Aucoin. Sunday’s Skill Competition lets players show off their stuff with shot-accuracy, goaltending, and shot-speed contests. On Monday, the Eastern and Western conferences face off in a game to determine which cardinal direction will reign supreme and which will be demoted to an ordinal compass point.

Guests will take in icy, low-friction feats under the 137-foot barrel-vault ceiling of historic Boardwalk Hall. Vote for the starting lineup until January 25 in an effort to get favorite players out on the ice and force rival squads to wear dunce caps in the penalty box.

Very nice place to attend an event. Warm atmosphere to attend with family. Clean restrooms and polite staff. Getting in moves very well. I like attending functions here contrary to other arenas that are often poorly controlled on the entry systems.
