Inspired by Leonard Ajkun’s own experience of emigration, Legacy, The Odyssey of Albania, explores a culture with a vivid and tumultuous history. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Albania’s independence, Ajkun reaches back much further to rituals common around 2000 BC and the impact made by Roman and Byzantine rule before turning to contemporary topics such as the immigrant experience. Angular, energetic dances by rows of women illustrate the spirit of Islamic women who, though veiled, joined men in battle. Other scenes present a sensuality that turns hesitant and exultant in an achingly intimate pas de deux. Traditional Albanian music underscores a production design that’s modern in tone, the dancers wearing sleek, minimalistic costumes as slowly shifting colors cast an evocative glow across the back of the stage.
