What You’ll Do
More than 5,000 years ago, henna body art was a popular means to stay cool in hot climates due to the henna plant’s natural cooling properties. Since then, henna has transformed from a practical tool to an expressive art form. During a two-hour workshop, henna artist Akiyo Ogura shows you how to make your own henna paste and apply it to skin. After creating a test pattern on paper, participants then transfer their designs onto their own bodies.
See Traditional and Modern-Day Henna
The workshop begins with Akiyo showing photographs of traditional henna usage and modern-day designs.
Draw Your Own Henna Designs
Learn to use a henna applicator to create your own body art. Guests are advised against wearing white clothing, since the ink may stain.
Henna Design from the Instructor
Instructor Akiyo Ogura draws a small henna design to complement each guest’s artwork.
For Akiyo Ogura, henna design is both a celebration of the body and a testament to the mind’s creative prowess. Since discovering a passion for henna in 2001, she has lent her expertise to clients of all stripes, beautifying bodies for weddings and special events or applying the ink in more inventive ways, such as masking scars. Her wearable artwork has been featured in magazines such as Marie Claire and Seventeen.
