Alameda County Fair

The Alameda County Fair is more than just carnival rides, family-friendly entertainment, and hands-on learning, although it’s certainly all of those things, too. But its main distinction is its lineup of live music, with some of the biggest names in contemporary pop, rock, and country scheduled to take the stage:

The Music Highlights

  • Sugar Ray (June 16): Before he was wearing jaws-proof galoshes in Sharknado 2, Mark McGrath was singing the summertime staples “Fly,” “Every Morning,” and “When It’s Over” as the front-man of this laid-back California outfit.
  • John Michael Montgomery (June 23): This troubadour’s deep, rich pipes soar over romantic ballads such as “I Swear,” an earnest love poem that requires the singer to deposit a quarter in a jar each time a couple dances to it at their wedding. It’s far from his only hit, however—Montgomery has carved out his own spot in the country music scene thanks to chart-topping singles and album sales of more than 15 million.
  • Rose Royce (June 25): The ’70s outfit behind megahit “Car Wash” and the emotive ballad “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore” deliver hip-shaking old-school funk and soul
  • America (July 2): The 70’s powerhouse trio behind breezy gems such as “Horse With No Name” and “Ventura Highway” continues to win over crowds with their meditative folk rock
  • Wynonna and the Big Noise (July 5): You may have met her as the younger half of mother-daughter duo The Judds, but Wynonna struck out on her own in 1992, and in 2011, she started the Big Noise, with whom she produced such songs as “Only Love,” “No One Else on Earth,” and “My Strongest Weakness.”

  • Live horse racing, included with admission
  • In the carnival midway, hop aboard dozens of different rides and win prizes playing games
  • On July 4th, watch a fireworks spectacular (Tip: the best viewing spots are at the Budweiser Grandstand at the horse-racing track.)
