The Scouting Report

Last season, the Aces claimed their third Kelly Cup victory in a decade. But the bragging rights mean very little in the ECHL’s Pacific Division, which currently has Alaska fighting for breathing room in the league’s tightest divisional race. The schedule throughout December and January features three-game series against some of the toughest Pacific teams, including the Bakersfield Condors and the Idaho Steelheads. Victories here will count for a lot in a division where a few points can be the difference between a playoff berth and being forced to do the division-winner’s laundry during the offseason.

Alaska Aces

In 2006—just three seasons after joining the ECHL—the Alaska Aces became the second team in league history to win both the Brabham Cup for most points during the regular season and the Kelly Cup as playoff champions. To make sure the league truly knew who they were, or perhaps because they thought they left their spare locker room keys inside one of the Cups, the Aces won both again in 2011. That consistent play has helped the team build a loyal following, a fact that’s impossible to ignore as fans clang their cowbells in support during games at Sullivan Arena. Mascot Boomer the polar bear does his part to rile up crowds by strutting around the arena and getting fans on their feet for every home contest.
