What You'll Get
Classic-rock bands still reminisce about the days when riffs cost a nickel and gentlemen took off their hats whenever the Grim Reaper walked by. Cue up timeless tunes with this GrouponLive deal to see America at Casino Miami Jai-Alai. For $18.50, you get general admission for two on Saturday, March 23, at 9 p.m. (up to a $44.96 value, including all fees). Doors open at 8 p.m.
Although two of the three members of America were born in the United States, they first started making music in England. But their band name is more than just a tribute to their birthplace; it’s an embodiment of their musical roots in American folk music. Their signature hit, “A Horse with No Name,” clops along with rustic strumming and Dewey Bunnell’s meditative tenor, which takes on a Southwestern drawl as he describes surreal imagery in the desert. Besides sending Neil Young on a mission to find his long-lost twin, the song catapulted the trio’s name to number one on the charts and their self-titled debut album to platinum status. In the years that followed, they would continue to produce chart-climbing hits, including such journeyman classics as “Ventura Highway,” “Tin Man,” and “Sister Golden Hair.” Although the group dwindled to a duo with the 1977 exit of Dan Peek, who tragically passed away in 2011, Gerry Beckley and Bunnell have continued to produce albums ever since, all while maintaining an impressive schedule of live shows that showcase their intertwining harmonies and guitar work.
