Included Plays

A group of men sit in a room, struggling to write a document. But this isn’t a late-night college cram session—that document is the Declaration of Independence, the writers are the Founding Fathers, and they’re expressing their emotions in song. Acclaimed performer, writer, and director Frank Galati helms this new staging of the beloved musical, which veers between drama and comedy as some of the greatest minds in American history grapple with questions of a nation’s future and wonder what kind of paper they should use.

Underneath the Lintel

Underneath the Lintel thrusts audiences into a librarian’s quest to solve the riddle of a book mysteriously returned after a 113-year stint on the overdue list. David Strathairn, known for his Oscar-nominated performance as Edward R. Murrow in Good Night, and Good Luck, brings decades of acting savvy to the role of the librarian. Throughout the play, Strathairn delivers a lecture incorporating a suitcase full of clues and a blackboard to explain his worldwide search for the book’s borrower.

A Christmas Carol

Now in its 37th year, ACT’s vibrant adaptation of the Charles Dickens’s classic tale has filled more than 800,000 viewers with holiday spirit. Dozens of performers fill the multigenerational cast to bring the yuletide ghost story to life. With an original score, period costumes, and a striking scenic design, ACT’s production dampens humbugs while illuminating the heart of the original text.

Major Barbara

Barbara simply wants to do good, but her noble quest has suddenly become much more complicated. An officer of the Salvation Army, she faces a moral quandary when her church accepts sizable donations from a whiskey distillery and an arms manufacturer—and the fact that the latter is helmed by her father doesn’t make her dilemma any easier. Confronted with her own beliefs about charity, complicity, family, morality, and jaunty hats, Barbara makes her way through Shaw’s celebrated political comedy, now brought to life through a co-production with Theatre Calgary.
