Anchorage Opera enlivens Alaska’s cultural life with lavish productions of classic and modern operas. Adapted from Shakespeare’s celebrated tragedy by master composer Giuseppe Verdi, Macbeth follows the rise and fall of a power-hungry lord and his scheming wife as they claim the throne with murder, treachery, and the ability to shatter foes’ favorite crystal with resonant arias. New York Opera veteran Cynthia Edwards directs the Alaskan premiere of the opera with a cast headed by internationally recognized performers Todd Thomas and Brenda Harris, who return to the stage together as Macbeth and his lady in roles they’ve made their own throughout their long careers. One hour before curtain, a pre-opera lecture delivers insights on the show, the music, and helpful spot-removal techniques.
Performances take place in the 700-seat Discovery Theatre, whose graceful curves and ceiling-mounted acoustical discs deftly bounce sounds into audience ears. Guests become absorbed in the action while nestled in unique seating upholstered in vibrant, flower-themed tapestry designed by Alaskan resident Paula Dickey in collaboration with local bees.
