Ann

**_Ann_ on Broadway**

“Nowadays, hell, you can't hardly even get into a primary unless you've done time in rehab.” So says Governor Ann Richards in the biographical _Ann_, brought to vivid life by playwright and star Holland Taylor. It's the type of quip the straight shooting, fiery force of nature was known for. Richards' no-nonsense attitude became her trademark as she rose to national prominence as the keynote speaker at the 1988 Democratic National Convention, then became the first female Governor of Texas in half a century. Emmy-winner Holland Taylor’s script gives audiences a glimpse into the late Ms. Richards’ colorfully red, white, and blue story, detailing her rise from housewife to political superstar, as well as her groundbreaking candidness about her struggles with alcoholism. Taylor’s crackling performance captured the attention of critics and earned her a 2013 Tony nomination for best actress and a 2013 Outer Critics Circle Award for outstanding solo performance. As Charles Isherwood of the [New York Times](http://gr.pn/15iWmCI) notes, the actress, “...her cherry-red lips blazing beneath a white wig that seems to travel with its own spotlight, has worked this lovably ornery woman deep into her bones. If you can spy even a crack of daylight between actor and character in this performance, you’ve got better eyes than I do.”
