The Deal

Anne of Green Gables, The Musical

Anne is plucky, talkative, imaginative, and eager to please—but in the eyes of her sibling, that doesn’t make up for the fact that she should have been a boy. When aging farmer Matthew Cuthbert has a heart attack during a harvest, he and his sister, Marilla, decide they need some help with the workload. Since it’s only 1903 and labor laws don’t yet permit giant wheat-threshing robots to work on farms, they contact the local orphanage to adopt a boy—but receive a little red-haired girl by mistake. Matthew instantly takes to little Anne’s spirit, but the more duty-driven Marilla isn’t so easily won over.

Recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest-running annual musical-theatre production in the world, Anne of Green Gables, The Musical has been lighting up the stage since 1965. While the story stays true to the classic book by Lucy Maud Montgomery, the staging allows for an extra dose of humor—and a whole lot of music.
