Antony and Cleopatra
This dinner-theatre adaptation puts a comedic spin on the tragic Shakespearean love story. Read on for a description of the traditional story.
Two towering figures in world history also have the distinction of being at the center of one of Shakespeare’s most romantic tragedies. The love affair between Mark Antony, one of the three Triumvirs of Rome, and Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt, shaped the future of the Roman Empire, but at its core, their eponymous play is the story of two strong-willed people and the passion that would eventually consume them. Highly influenced by the writings of Plutarch, Shakespeare’s version of events accomplishes a deft dramatic feat: in its depiction of the imagined inner lives of two remarkable people, the play reveals their place in the stratosphere of history only because it brings them down to earth.
