Based on One Thousand and One Nights, the celebrated collection of Middle Eastern and South Asian folk tales, Arabian Nights brings the stories of clever Scheherazade to vivid life as she tricks the murderous Persian king into postponing her execution. With prismatic visuals and intricate puppetry, the production presents five of her tales, such as "Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves" and "How Abu Hassan Broke Wind." Colorful puppets and intricate sets animate the more fantastical elements, as the performance's breathless transitions help blend together the suspense, romance, comedy, and cast's sighs of relief at not having to perform all 1,001 nights. Arabian Nights not only earned the Nora Theatre Company and Underground Railway Theater awards from the Independent Reviewers of New England, it also prompted the Boston Globe to praise them for animating the source material with "a storyteller’s hypnotic voice, a richly colored backdrop and some extraordinarily dexterous performances."
