A sack of tiny, glowing-green crocodile tongues, a jug of water, 10 hairs from a human head—these are the ingredients a mysterious old man tells lonely 5-year-old James Henry Trotter to combine for a magical potion that will bring him adventure. But on his way back home, James trips and accidentally spills the sack of crocodile tongues onto the peach tree in his yard. Although the tree had never borne fruit before, suddenly it produces a peach the size of a house, which James’ nasty aunts claim as their own. One night, while James is supposed to clean the rubbish left by those who’d come to witness the strange fruit, he wanders through a tunnel in the peach’s flesh, eventually stumbling upon the pit, where a group of giant insects waits. The centipede then bites through the peach’s stem, and thus begins a rolling adventure through the streets, the ocean, and the sky.
Based on David Wood's adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic story, the Area Stage Company’s musical production of James and the Giant Peach begins after the dust has settled and James is living in the giant pit in New York. He and his group of insect friends retell their tale, faithfully bringing to life every magical moment with elaborate sets, colorful costumes, and professional consultation from a wizard.
