Boz Scaggs

With his latest album, MEMPHIS, soul sojourner Boz Scaggs comes full circle back to his first valentine–rhythm and blues. The record is a collection of personal favorites, each one graced with the lounging guitar of Ray Parker, Jr., the gentle keyboards of Spooner Oldham, and, of course, the voice of Scaggs himself, which remains more sensual than Barry White’s beanbag chair. On his latest tour, the revved up performer shares slow-cooked portions of his latest creation, along with a generous dose of his foot-shuffling classics. His sly guitar work is as tight as it was in 1976 on the megahits “Lido Shuffle,” “What Can I Say,” and the slinky, sheet-stealing “Lowdown,” all from his breakthrough album, Silk Degrees. After his solo career took off, Boz wrung his cache of rock, blues, jazz, and soul onto the charts, and gave the ’70s something they could dance to without feeling like they were in the ’70s. Further decades found the performer hopscotching genres and touring as the Dukes of September with Michael McDonald and Donald Fagen, who gets covered on MEMPHIS with Scaggs’ river-gazing rendition of the Steely Dan song “Pearl of the Quarter.”<p>

Most concertgoers who’ve squinted their ways through major concerts at other venues can attest that the in-the-round seating arrangement and revolving stage are causes for celebration. And the stars have noticed. Since the 1970s, the state-of-the-art venue has attracted a long list of legendary performers including Willie Nelson, Tom Jones, and Aretha Franklin. While their golden vocal chords ring through the stellar acoustics, fans sink into comfy seats, savor a flashy light system, and discard their unnecessary opera glasses.
