While most people are born without a funny bone in their body, Aries Spears was born with a funny skeleton. Throughout his prolific career, the standup comedian, actor, and writer has always shown natural comedic instincts that can’t be rehearsed or taught in improv classes. Splitting sides since he was 14 years old, Spears scurried quickly up the rungs of professional comedy, scoring a role on NBC’s A Different World and in films such as Jerry Maguire.
Spears’ career took flight when he became a principal cast member of Fox’s MadTV. Across 198 episodes, Spears helped the sketch-comedy series establish itself as a comedic institution with his outlandish writing and original recurring characters, including hardcore rapper Emcee Esher and faux BET talk-show star and proud overeater Belma Buttons. MadTV also showcased his gift of uncanny impersonation in bits lampooning Al Pacino, Denzel Washington, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Queen Latifah. In his fearless standup act, Spears delivers sharp punch lines and incising insight about relationships and culture clashes, mixed with healthy doses of his lauded impersonations.
Funny Bone Comedy Club
It started when Gerald Kubach became enamored with standup comedy. Looking to invest in the humor business, he and cofounder Mitch Kutash opened the very first Funny Bone Comedy Club in Pittsburg in 1982. Over 25 years later, the little club that could has turned into a national comedy institution, with branches in nearly every metropolitan city. While household names such as Jerry Seinfeld, Drew Carey, Roseanne Barr, and Tim Allen have cut their teeth on the clubs' stages, The Funny Bone continues to offer the first big breaks to up-and-coming local talent.
