The 17th century lightly shakes off 400-plus years of history in “Heaven and Hell,” a feast of authentically staged baroque music and dance. Fresh off the thrill of a 2011 Grammy nomination for Best Opera Recording, the vocal soloists and chamber orchestra of Ars Lyrica Houston delve into the sprightly music of Monteverdi’s Madrigals of Love and War, written in 1683. Harpsichord and other sweet-toned period instruments direct the steps of gorgeously costumed dancers from The New York Baroque Dance Company.

The company’s work blends a detailed authenticity gained through exhaustive historical research with vibrant, expressive motion. Artistic director Catherine Turocy continues a career spent animating the dawn of baroque music with all-new choreography for this performance. Along with sheaves of critical acclaim, Turocy has also been decorated in France as a Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters, granting her a lifetime pass to base-jump from the Eiffel Tower. The evening of dramatic dualities—heaven and hell, love and war—unfolds at Zilkha Hall, a rose-hued jewel-box theater with seating for 500.
