The Art of Rap

  • Ice-T: The O.G. made history with 1987’s Rhyme Pays (the first hip-hop album to be slapped with the Parental Advisory sticker) before pioneering gangsta rap with 1991’s O.G. Original Gangster and kicking the hornet’s nest with his band Body Count; younger generations may know him best from his role as Detective Tutuola on Law and Order: SVU and the reality series Ice Loves Coco
  • Bone Thugs-N-Harmony: The quintet introduced many listeners to their self-described “flip flop flow” with ’90s hits including “East 1999” and “Tha Crossroads”—their Grammy-winning single about death that salutes hip-hop icon Eazy-E. The song is especially poignant since he’s the one who signed them to Ruthless Records.
  • Afrika Bambaataa This legendary south Bronx DJ fathered electro-funk and breakbeat DJing in the early ’80s and earned his nickname as the “Amen Ra of Hip Hop Kulture” with 1982’s landmark hit, “Planet Rock,” which was the first hit to merge hip-hop with electronic beats
  • Big Daddy Kane: the Grammy-winning rapper and former member of the Juice Crew’s mix of rapid-fire rhymes and swagger inspired generations of MCs, including former hype man Jay-Z
  • Biz Markie: Youngsters learn hip-hop fundamentals from the Yo Gabba Gabba star, familiar to adults as the “clown prince of rap” behind the hit “Just a Friend.”
  • Other Notable Acts: Cold Crush Brothers | DJ Quik | Doug E Fresh | EPDM | King T | Grand Master Melle Mel | Kool Moo Dee | Kurtis Blow | Mack 10 | Rapper’s Delight | Ras Kass | Slick Rick | Tha Alhaholiks | Too Short | Xzibit
