Growing out of choreographer Lin Hwai-min’s original 1973 Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, the modern Taiwanese steppers of Cloud Gate 2 blend martial-arts-inspired leaps and modern dance maneuvers. Lin and his company gather dances from Gen-Y Taiwanese choreographers and free-range ballet farms to form a program of playful, frequently comic pieces. Displaying emotion with their faces nearly as much as with their bodies, the dancers move and tumble with a casual athleticism amid creative costuming and props.
Whereas Cloud Gate 2 immerses audiences in Eastern arts, “Don’t Fence Me In” celebrates Western civilization onstage with Tex-Mex polkas, cowboy songs, and covered-wagon races. Guest performers include pow-wow drummer North Bear, the fiddle-wielding Quebe Sisters Band, and High Plains yodelers Wylie & the Wild West. The venerable National Council for the Traditional Arts curates the evening with help from working cowboys and other authentically hatted southwestern specimens.
