Last year, when Wonderbolt Circus’s Cirkzilla toured the province, its energetic, family-friendly show inverted frowns throughout sold-out crowds with its jaw-dropping aerial feats and ’70s funk music. This year, 11 performers return once again to dazzle audiences with a storyline that follows the “funkateers,” a group of Bootsy Collins-inspired aliens who land on Earth and take in its sights via stilts, unicycles, and LED-lit hula hoops. With black light blanketing the venue, aerial artists take on an extraterrestrial essence as they tumble, climb, and flutter on dangling silks and straps. Also in the show, jugglers laugh in the face of gravity and an acrobatic group performs a charivari number, which is a folk dance to celebrate when a clown has earned his or her red nose and a pair of shoes from Shaq’s closet. Amid this frantic and captivating spectacle, fans may not even notice the absence of animal acts. As a modern circus, Wonderbolt seeks to engage audience with shows that are both exciting and humane.
