Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo
In makeup and tutus, the gentlemen of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo have been leaping across the border of fine art and comedy since 1974. One of the New York Times’s many reviews of the ensemble praises it for serving “largely as a critique—however loving—of the conventions and traditions of ballet, many of which can look awfully musty to modern-day eyes: the tiaras, the fairy tales, the hierarchies that flourish onstage and off.”
In that spirit, with sparkling corsets framing fields of chest hair, the troupe tackles classic works with regard dosed in silliness. Their repertory might find a dying swan molting feathers before vainly bowing for two and a half minutes, passive-aggressive dancers barely disguising their interpersonal problems, and male characters dropping beefy tiara-wearers in elegantly slapstick displays. Yet apart from comedy is genuine skill and showmanship—heavy bodies balancing gracefully en pointe and posing as delicate water sprites—that elevates the performances to a shade of high art.
