Scottish Ballet Presents A Streetcar Named Desire

Now that the Scottish Ballet’s UK tour is finished, film director Nancy Meckler and choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa bring their take on Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play much closer to its Southern setting. The adaptation tells the story of Blanche DuBois, a wilting Southern belle who travels to New Orleans to live with her sister Stella, only to clash with Stella’s husband Stanley and his animalistic lifestyle. Making things worse is Blanche’s tumultuous past, which she deals with by slowly severing ties with reality. Ochoa captures this descent into madness through haunting footwork, from Blanche dreamily arching backward to the denizens of New Orleans circling her like the ghost of a geometry teacher. But the choreography can also turn violent and flailing, as it does during Stanley’s eventual assault of Blanche. Such tonal shifts, along with the ballet’s distinct Southern flavor, have earned praise from the London Evening Standard, who called it “everything you could want of Tennessee Williams—florid, poetic, and poisonously beautiful—with just the right amount of New Orleans seasoning to the action.”
