Musikfest, a 10-day festival spread across 15 different stages, kicks off its 29th year at the PNC Plaza with a three-band bill headlined by Young the Giant. Dissatisfied with the straightforward musical compositions and science-fair volcanoes they created while in high school, the band members drew upon their European and Middle-Eastern roots to forge a sundrenched sound enhanced by soothing vocals, infectious pop hooks, and reverb-soaked guitar licks. Their light-hearted surf-rock tunes gained the attention of Kings of Leon, who asked Young the Giant to join its 2009 tour. In concert, Young the Giant entrances listeners with dreamy fare from its 2011 self-titled debut, including the blissful "Guns Out" and "Strings," a Hawaiian-inspired track embellished by twinkling guitar tones. Special guests Portugal. The Man deliver country-tinged indie rock accented by grand-piano notes and cheerful chanting often heard during their choruses. Dance-rock darlings White Rabbits open up the night with an addicting blend of calypso, reggae, and ska rhythms bolstered by the beats of two drummers and a construction worker whose sole job is to repeatedly bang a hammer on the stage.
