For the 25th annual Reggae on the Rocks festival, legendary reggae artists and talented up-and-comers stir it up against Red Rocks Amphitheatre’s backdrop of mountains, prairies, and sandstone monoliths. As a silver-anniversary treat, this year’s celebration features a headlining set from Grammy-winning legend Winston Rodney, best known throughout the reggae world as Burning Spear. For more than 35 years, the famed singer and musical activist has escorted listeners to virtual Jamaica with his stash of Jah-loving jams. Along with his band of backup singers, horn players, and accredited groove artisans, Burning Spear preaches love and unity in upbeat, dub-heavy odes. Fellow reggae workhorses and Grammy winners Steel Pulse have kept their fingers on the national carotid since 1975. From teaching the burgeoning U.K. punk scene how to sway to pied-pipering a devoted fanbase across two centuries, leader David “Dreads” Hinds and his dreadlocked crew make social commentary catchy with their politically charged dancehall anthems.

Other acts painting Red Rocks red, yellow, and green include Jamaican vocal group The Meditations, whose sweet island harmonies have been heard on many Bob Marley tracks. Billboard reggae chart-toppers Rebelution toss some rock into their raga, and Denver’s own Two Tone ska machine Judge Roughneck encourages more skanking than a drill sergeant wearing checkered fatigues. Rounding out the roster, Yellow Dubmarine infuses the songs of The Beatles with percolating horns and shuffling riddims.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Originally known as the Garden of Angels, Red Rocks enchants visitors with ethereal scenery and top-notch acoustics 6,450 feet above sea level. The amphitheater geologically emerged from the ocean floor over millions of years, its walls housing fossil fragments of various dinosaurs, including plesiosaurs, mosasaurs, and several plush Barney dolls. The carbon-dated rock 'n' roll history of Red Rocks includes performances by The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and The Grateful Dead, who kept coming back to the venue year after year in search of their missing flip-flops. The sonic stone architecture of the venue has also led to dozens of popular live recordings, including U2’s Live at Red Rocks: Under a Blood Red Sky, John Tesh’s Live at Red Rocks, and Neil Young’s Road Rock Vol. 1.

Due to security restrictions, G-Passes must be printed out and presented in person at the event. They cannot be redeemed through Groupon's mobile app.
