Now in its second year, the Nation's Football Classic rekindles a 90-year-old rivalry when D.C.'s own Howard University Bison clash with Atlanta's Morehouse College Maroon Tigers. Since 1923, the two programs have battled for gridiron glory a total of 34 times, most recently in 2011 during a victory for Howard that marked the two teams return after a 15-year hiatus. The Bison enter this year's matchup backed by a 22-10-2 overall record in the series. On the Morehouse side, a potent offense is led by running back David Carter, whose ability to distract defenders by lighting sparklers from his cleats resulted in a team-best 19 rushing touchdowns a season ago.

A full schedule of free events leads up to Saturday's game, including an all-day symposium on Thursday. On Friday evening, a pep rally riles up both sides, and prior to kickoff on Saturday, a fan festival fuels tailgates with games, music, and exhibit booths. Then, during halftime, the festivities continue as each school's marching band bursts into dance moves and brassy notes loud enough to rattle RFK Stadium and startle a dozing Abe Lincoln at his memorial.
