At a sprawling outdoor festival that suits their expansive spirit, headlining head-trippers The Flaming Lips march onward in their history of over-the-top live shows gushing with sensory overload. Throughout the psychedelic parade, singer Wayne Coyne leads his experimental band of “fearless freaks” through hits such as “Do You Realize??” and “She Don’t Use Jelly,” sometimes while rolling over heads in his plastic bubble or hypnotizing the audience into believing they see a grown man rolling around in a plastic bubble.

Though inspired by some of the same ’60s sounds, St. Vincent takes the trippiness in a darker direction, subbing in jagged, uneasy riffs for the Lips’ mellower guitar haze. On stage, Annie Clark stands with eyes wide as a Disney princess as her hands churn out astoundingly intricate guitar lines distorted to sound like bleating horns or signals from the bottom of the ocean. Meanwhile, her octave-hopping voice brings to life the diverse cast of desperate characters who haunt the lyrics of 2011’s Strange Mercy.

The retro sound of Fitz & the Tantrums emanates from deep within old church organs and piles of Motown and Stax vinyl, making the septet perhaps the most obviously danceable group of the evening. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah broke onto the scene with a 2005 debut album that won piles of national acclaim for its fuzzy indie-rock energy despite being self-produced and self-distributed via frisbee. Filling out the main stage, Telegraph Canyon make organ and acoustic guitar jangles sound positively epic with booming percussion and urgent vocals. A side stage also finds room for the various corners of Americana explored by Quiet Corral, Smile Smile, and Air Review.
