The Scouting Report
At first glance it would seem the Hawks have begun the season hot at home and cold on the road, but their away record doesn’t reflect the hard-fought ball they’ve played. On November 5, they took the reigning-champion Spurs to the brink in a 94–92 loss, and on November 7 they fell to Charlotte in double overtime. The stats better reflect the team’s strength on the hardwood: the Hawks stand tall with the league’s second-most assists, fourth-most steals, and ninth-most points-per-game through November 10. These late-November contests—including a rematch against the Hornets on the 29th—give the team further opportunities to prove their might in front of their adoring hometown fans and motivational slogans welded into the Philips Arena ceiling.
The Hawks migrated to Atlanta from St. Louis for the 1968–69 season and have since become a venerated local institution. Though the Atlanta club has never claimed an NBA title, they’ve appeared in the playoffs 27 times since 1969, stamping their punchcard frequently enough to receive free hot dogs for the whole team during their next postseason appearance. Since 1999, the Hawks have perched in the rafters of Philips Arena, where more than 18,000 fans cheer them to victory in the Eastern Conference’s Southeast Division.
