Copland—Appalachian Spring: Perhaps the most quintessentially American orchestral suite of all time, Appalachian Spring evokes pioneer ideals of industry and humane fiddle treatment through folk tunes and hymns of the 19th century. It was commissioned as a ballet for Martha Graham in 1944, but the music has since floated free as a vibrant suite that needs no visual accompaniment.
Saint-Saëns—Piano Concerto No. 2: Swiss-Chinese pianist Louis Schwizgebel, who has been praised by The Guardian and The New York Times, plays the composer’s most popular composition from the Romantic era. Throughout much of the piece, there’s a flurry of sixteenth notes that create a playful, almost fantastical atmosphere.
Vaughan Williams—Symphony No. 5: First performed in 1943, Williams’ fifth symphony conjures a calm, idyllic state across four movements.
