When asked what advice he had to offer beginning songwriters, Newspeak drummer/composer David T. Little replied “Listen to everything…it’s not really an acceptable response to say, ‘Oh, I don’t like this piece,’ because you can learn something about it even if you don’t like it.” This open-minded approach is on display in every one of Newspeak’s compositions, which effortlessly wed chamber music, jazz, and heavy metal without really sounding like any of them. Perhaps Lucid Culture put it best: “You could call this punk classical. Fearlessly aware, insightfully political, resolutely defiant… sometimes raw and starkly intense, other times lushly atmospheric.” The meshing of influences should come as no surprise; the musicians are just as comfortable playing Frederic Rzewski as they are blazing through “Won’t Get Fooled Again” on election night, which Newspeak did in 2008. On Friday, June 21, which is same night as Newspeak concert, the Atlas Cafe will feature signature noodle dishes and treats from guest chef Erik Bruner-Yang, who is also the chef and owner of H Street’s Toki Underground and soon-to-open Maketo.
